EDUCATOR

PASSIONATE TEACHER

A passionate music educator for over 40 years, Tracy has taught instrumental music and worked to build music programs in schools across Melbourne and in the Riverina district of New South Wales. After completing her teacher training at the University of Melbourne, she became a brass teacher in Victoria’s Southern Metropolitan Region, visiting several schools each week to provide lessons and take rehearsals. Knowing how motivational such experiences had been in her life and those of her friends, she became active in organising the Southern Metropolitan Region Music Camps, where as many as 500 young musicians gathered each year to share an intensive week of music-making.

MENTOR

Having amassed considerable experience of how music programs were run in the different schools where she had taught, she became a music coordinator for the Southern Metropolitan Region (Victorian Education Department). In this capacity, she worked to connect instrumental teachers who often felt isolated as they moved from school to school, helped schools build programs and manage staff, advocated for program funding, organised conferences and professional learning opportunities for music teachers, and organised performing and workshop events to bring students and teachers together and enhance the learning offered at each individual school.

EDUCATOR TO ALL

Knowing the power ensemble music-making can have in improving students’ learning, social and emotional intelligence, self-esteem, and joy in life, Tracy has dedicated herself to equipping her students to flourish in this arena and facilitating meaningful and engaging ensemble experiences within her schools. While most of her teaching has focused on Years 7 – 12, she has also taught adult learners and students of primary and pre-primary age. She is an experienced mentor of graduate teachers and has tutored tertiary music education students. Tracy is currently the Concert Band Co-ordinator at McKinnon Secondary College, where she directs the Wind Symphony, Orchestra, and Year 7 Bands.
